    Work Statement

This work began with my rethinking of the concept of drama. It reflects on elements of drama, such as the script, the climax of the story, the trivia, the promotional materials, the plots, the self-statement, and the rehearsal; images of the stage setting are used as the backdrop for the performance, which is about the classic techniques of stage lighting and stage design. With a series of affirmative orders that point to meaningless content, the work represents investigations of the essence of drama and the influence and anxiety that museums and exhibition institutions may impose upon artistic individuals.

    Exhibition Work Statement

The exhibition revolves around the artist-founded Mama La Art Foundation, which produces contemporary artists and contemporary art. The core of the theatre is the artwork, which sponsors the produced artists for academic exhibitions and discussions. The produced artists become the actors of this theater, and they also produce artworks. So far, the organization has produced six artists: Chen Qiqu, Dai Jaro, Dai Zhenlian, Fu Genli, and Yamamoto Lianlian, Werner Heisenberg. Lianli Yamamoto, Werner Heisenberg. The exhibition includes more than 30 works of art including paintings, videos, installations and live performances.

Dai Chenlian's work creates a vast fictional theatre that is both real and happening. His work also presents a new mode of artistic production, in which he virtualizes himself, or rather he realizes the virtual artist. Here, the artist's work no longer presents a central idea in its complete form, but a performative action. These make the clear boundaries between the real world and the theatrical performance disappear. In this vast art theatre, the curator is both an independent exhibition curator and a part of the artist's creation. Together with artists, the curator tries to break the established rules and to expose problems of the progressively rigid system of "contemporary art", the mechanisms of exhibition, art and capital, and creations.

    Work Statement

The three opening events of this solo exhibition were three performances in parallel structure. The performers included professional dancers, artists, art collectors, a gallerist, and the gallery’s staff. The exhibition was made specifically for the venue, Space Local, and it explores issues of time, exhibition per se, and theatre.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream was the main reference of the exhibition. From various versions of the play, Dai studied how the transitional lighting effects and blocking were actually realized and compared them with how they are instructed in the script. These elements, together with materials about the preparation of this exhibition, became the core contents of the three performances, which attempted to open up a narration and an imagination about the gallerist herself.

    Work Statement

I collected a set of raw materials, such as sounds, texts, images, photos, and videos with fieldworks. With these materials, I invented a rehearsal based on the classic rehearsal method. Then I took the minor elements that appeared in those rehearsals to form the contents of the actual performance. The performance is divided into three sections, 15 minutes each. The last 5 minutes of each section is set to be the “anonymous moments”, in which the performers do not know how they are supposed to act. The major elements of the performance are the constant moving of objects, fragments of human voices and sirens, and still images projected on the wall. The situation is not meant to be “enjoyed” — it is against the model of consumerist spectacle. Rather, it is a naturalistic representation of time, language, and theatre.

The theme of the entire project is Shaoxing, a historic city and my hometown. Here, historic materials and memories are represented as brutal body movements and obscure and inverted light and shadow. With overlapping images and a certain juxtaposition of objects, I hope to display the tremendous volume of Shaoxing’s local history as well as a personal history that is obscure, unelaborated, yet authentic.

    Work Statement

Take the artist's mother as a clue, investigate the experiences of his mother's work over the decades, collect graphic and audio-visual materials, and combine them with her oral narrative. Recordings are made a standard performance piece is generated according to normal regular rehearsal techniques, and then the remainder of the performance of this piece is used as the final .The performance effect is presented. The manipulation of objects and the forced movement of the body are used to string together three memory and historical fragments of the mother video.

    Work Statement

The Spring River Flows East (V) is the fifth time of family theater project, presented in the studio of the artist Hexun, based on poetry and theatre, takes the rhyme of poetry (vocal tones and monosyllabic) as a starting point to show, beside the nature and quality of monosyllabic and words, the theater also shows the juxtaposition of performance and real-time imaging, provides more possibilities to watch the multiple and partial time. Along by this digressive stretches is the heroic dream from nobodies who are under time sections.
